I just picked up this adorable skirt from Forever 21. It is called the Bow Adorned Skirt and it is available in both Taupe and in Olive. I opted for the taupe thinking it would go with more things. I absolutely love the bow detailing along with the pleats. But, what I love even more is the price...can't go wrong with $15.80!!! I think this skirt will be a great transition piece from Summer to Fall. What do you think?

Charleston Fashion Week Bridal Couture

Last Sunday I attended the Bridal Couture show presented by Charleston Fashion Week. It was definitely my favorite show! Besides being obsessed with the simple fact of wanting to be engaged, I also am obsessed with anything wedding related. When I arrived at the show I was greeted with "Rosemary Blackberry Champagne" and a cute goody bag. Inside the bad were wedding magazines, little knick knacks from the designers showing, and candy. Some of the designers and boutiques who showed at the event were White, Bella Vista, Carol Hannah, Bella Bidesmaid, The Wedding Row, LulaKate, and Belle Couture Bridal. Below are some of my faves from the event.

So I attended Charleston FashionWeek and it was completely AMAZING!!! I got to meet Mychael Knight from Project Runway and saw such amazing clothes! I will post pics soon. But below is a picture of me that the Charleston FashionWeek Blog took of me.

I was pretty disappointed by some of the ladies' oscar dress pics... some I did like were

Although I hate Miley Cyrus, I thought she looked gorgeous in a champagne Jenny Packham gown.

Kristen Stewart looked great in a stunning strapless gown by Monique Lhuillier. I really loved the midnight blue color.

Tina Fey looked classy and very fashionable in a leopard print Michael Kors gown.

Here are some of the looks I was extremely dissapointed with...

I normally adore Sarah Jessica Parker, but this shapeless Chanel gown was just plain awkward.

Charlize Theron's Christian Dior frock looked a little inappropriate due to the strategically placed rosettes.

Zoe Kravits looked very dated in a pale pink and red velvet gown.

Victoria Beckham Fall 2010

While I think many celebrities who try to dabble in Fashion are making a mistake, Victoria Beckham's Fall 2010 line is brilliant! I am not just saying this because I am apparently obsessed with her either. She stayed so true to herself, and crafted amazing pieces I would LOVE to have in my own wardrobe. I also adore the sunglasses she paired her pieces with, her own design i'm sure.

I am completely obsessed with Victoria Beckham! She is definitely my style icon! I hope to adapt my own fashion style similar to hers. She is always the inspiration behind what I wear everyday. I was definitely ecstatic when I saw the latest Glamour magazine with her on the cover. Below is my favorite shot.

Here are some of my favorite looks from the Grammy's!!!

RiRi looked extremely elegant in a feathered Eli Saab gown.

I absolutely loved this mermaid tulle gown!! Keri looked great!

Normally I think Taylor looks awkward, but she looked gorgeous at the Grammy's! She wore a sapphire off the shoulder Kaufman Franco gown.

Fergie looked super hot in some snakeskin stilettos and a royal blue Emilio Pucci mini!

Carrie looked very elegant but still trendy in a gown by Georges Chakra.

I wasn't very impressed with many of the outfit choices @ the SAG awards. However, I absolutely LOVED Kate Hudson's back baring white Elie Saab gown. She looked absolutely gorgeous!!! The gown was daring yet classic and complemented her figure perfectly. I also loved how she accessorized with the necklace in the back. I give her an A+!

AHHHH so this weekend is a huge weekend. It is my boyfriend's birthday, his mother's birthday, and his brother's girlfriend's birthday. haha I know confusing! We are renting a limo and going to a nice restaurant in Raleigh called the Angus Barn. I have been stressing out all weekend because I had NO IDEA what to wear. I mean its hard to find the balance between too casual and too dressy. However, I think I found the perfect dress at Nordstrom today. I had to get it altered because the length was just a little dated before. Here is a couple pics of the dress, give me your honest opinon!! Like I said Nordstrom is hemming it up about 9 inches so it will be about fingertip length. I plan on wearing it with some sheer black tights, Steve Madden heels, and some Betsey Johnson earrings.

So I just got back from a whole week in Seattle!! It is such an amazing city I would definately live there. While there we visited Nordstrom's Product Group, toured some malls, visited REI, and attended the ITAA. Here are some pics from the trip!

Shape Project for APD 242

Well I really LOVE sweets so I decided to use that as my inspiration for the project. I found pictures of my favorite sweets then found some new Spring '10 runway looks from Giles and Alexander McQueen and compared the shapes. As you can see I also incorporated colors, but mainly focused on similar shapes. I thought the comparison in color would help assist in the whole overall aestetic experience.

The shape of the Giles dress really resembles the shape of a Gummy Bear.

This Giles dress resembles the shape of a short piece of Bubble Tape.

This Giles dress really looks like and upside down icecream cone.

This Alexander McQueen looks resemples a lollipop with the models legs resembling a lollipop stick.

The sleeves on this Giles jacket really resemble a twisted wrapper of a candy.

The shape of this Giles skirt is very similar to a Little Debbie cake.

This Alexander McQueen blouse is very unique and resembles the same shape as a marshmallow.

The skirt on this Giles look is very similar to the top shape of a cupcake.

This dress by Giles really has the same shpe as a piece of chocolate from a candy bar.

This Giles suit resembles a long piece of licorice.

I cannot get my Britney Spears' pics up i really have no idea why. But here is some sketches of the costumes she and her dancers wore. Like I said before her stage costumes were so amazing and entricate. The costumes for the tour were designed by Dean and Dan Caten of Dsquared2 based in Canada. They did a fabulous job!! Here are some background information about the designing duo. Dean and Dan Caten are identical twins who were born Dean and Dan Catenacci in 1965 in Toronto Ontario. In 1983 the brothers moved to New York and attended Parsons The New School of Design. However they only stayed a semester and returned to Canada. They launched their first womenswear collection, DEanDAN in 1986. In 1988 they signed to Ports International (Ports 1961.) In 1991 they worked at the house of Versace. In 2003 they launched their own personal womens' collection.

I loved Stella McCartney's Spring 2010 collection! One word to describe the collection would be minimal. Stella's collection clearly displays that simple sofistication is quite beautiful and stylish. It had a very deconstructed yet sophisticated feel to it. Her pieces were very tailored with feminine touches such as ruffles. Here are a few pieces I really loved.

I went to the Britney Spear's concert this Saturday, and was very excited!!! My mom bought my friend and I nsoebleed seats this past May for the concert. However, once we got to the collesium we found out that our seats had been relocated....to STAGE SIDE!!!!! YES I was only seperated from Britney Spears by a spall fence and a very large body guard. I will post pics soon, but in this post I attatcched a you tube video of her here in Greensboro singing a cover for Alanis Morissette's You Ought to Know. I was told that this was the first time she sang live the whole tour....check it out!!! I loved it! Sunday Brunch

Every Sunday my mom comes to Greensboro and we have brunch at the O.Henry Hotel. This Sunday was beautiful so we decided to sit outside on the terrace. While there I decided to try peppermint tea because I have heard so many great things about it, and I must say it was pretty good!! To eat I had a bacon, carmalized onion, and cheese Frittata served with hashbrowns on top along with some romesco sauce.

After Brunch I got a pedicure with my mom then met up with my friend Amanda. Amanda and I did a little shopping at Anthropologie (FYI they are having a killer sale both online and in stores right now.) We hit up Ulta as well...I think I am like obbsessed with OPI nail polish! Greatest Trench EVER!!

SO, I have been longing for a trenchcoat for over a year now. I finally found and purchased the perfect one for me! I discovered it at Anthropologie and it fits perfectly. I normally have trouble finding coats because I am pretty short, so they always hang too low. But this one is wonderful! I also LOVEEEEE the ruffle details, it gives your basic trench a little twist. What do you think about it???

First Lady Sports a New "Do"

Last night the First Lady was at the Time 100 gala in NYC. She showed up with a totally, new look. Michelle Obama wore a black dress with stands of long beads, and a severe side part. In my opinon she looked VERY modern, but still maintained her simplistic classiness. The people at Shine by Yahoo thought that the First Lady looked like she may have got her inspiration from Rihanna. I could see how Shine thought that, but I think she was just trying out a more up to date look. What do you think?

Ok, so it is one of my best friends' birthday tomorrow. She invited me and a bunch of our friends to go to dinner at Firebird's tomorrow night. As soon as I told her I would love to go my immediate thought was "hmmm what will I wear?" I asked some of my friends what they were wearing just so I could see how dressy everyone was going to be and they told me they had not even thought about it. This starteling news left me in awe. Do other people really not plan out what they are going to wear, I know I do as soon as I learn I am going somewhere. Is this normal or is fashion REALLY REALLY all I live, sleep, dream, and think? All I know is I love clothes and style and cannot believe some people do not care about it at all. Do you guys find yourself in the same situation? any ideas what to wear, I think it's going to be pretty casual?

Spring '09 Trends I am wearing!

Black on White Prints

Your basic black and white got re-vamped! Worn together, the colors look effortlessly chic and definately NOT boring. Oscar de la Renta displayed this trend at his show! I usually accessorize with a bright colored handbag while wearing this trend! It adds a nice pop of color, try hot pink or bright yellow!

Mix-Matching
When I was a child my mother allowed me to dress myself on Fridays. Usually my outfits consisted of mix-match patterns. Luckily, the trend is in season! Designers such as my all time favorite, Michael Kors, put patterns together in unexpected ways! The trick to wearing this trend is to stay cohesive when it comes to the colors.

Pastels
Wearing pastels just screams "Spring" the only problem is they can have the tendancy to wash people out. So when I wear pastels I try to accent with a brighter shade of the same color. Just like Isaac Mizrahi did in his Spring '09 collection. I also wear a brighter color blush and lip gloss than usual so I don't look so pale.

Presidential Fashion

First Lady Michelle Obama has quickly become a fashion icon. Many compare her to the late Jackie Kennedy Onasis. Her are just a few pictures of the First Lady while she was in Europe with President Obama.

ACM Awards

This past Sunday the 44th Annual ACM awards were held in Las Vegas. All of country music's hottest stars were there. Here are a few pics...

Taylor Swift walks the carpet in a gorgeous red gown. I love the one sholder and the length. She normally goes for shorter dresses, but I think this one makes her look more sophisticated...in a great way!

Carrie Underwood here at the ACM awards, looking beautiful in a very pale pink gown. Carrie is also sporting the one sholder trend!

Kellie Pickler, a fellow North Carolinian like myself, was rocking gold at the ACM awards. I really like the gown it had a mermaid vibe to me with the scales and the shape and style of the dress. I think she looked glamorous!

And for the highlight of the night...

Carrie Underwood wore an emaculant crimson gown while preforming her hit song "I Told You So." The dress took over half the stage! I like the color, but I thought it was completely to large!

I recently just purchased the "possibilities" cardigan from Anthropology, and love it! You can wear it 6 different ways, it adds a new twist to a classic piece. I got it in Ivory for Spring, and have recieved many compliments on it. They have it in Ivory, Purple, Black, and sky. I like to wear it crossed in front like pictured below!

Kay Unger

I just recieved an invitation from Saks, inviting me to a special event to meet designer Kay Unger. The famous dress designer is coming to the Saks Fifth Avenue in Raleigh on April 16th. At this event you can meet the designer and have a personal wardrobe consultation while viewing her Spring 2009 collection.

Kay Unger was born and raised in Chicago, IL. She first discovered her passion for clothes by sewing scraps of fabric into dolls' dresses. She recieved a dregree in design from Parsons The New School for Design in New York City. After graduating college, she was an apprentice for Geoffrey Beene. Only a year later, she decided to take a chance and develop her own line. She designed clean line dress that stress class and femininity. She then developed The Gillian Group, which unfortunately failed in 1994. In 1999 she launched Kay Unger New York.

Kay Unger designs dresses for all ages and all body types. This is why my mother and I absolutely love her dresses! My mom actually just got re-married in one of her designs.

Here are a few pics of celebs in the spotlight this week...what do you think about their fashion choices?

Reese Witherspoon at the Premiere of her new film, Monsters Vs. Aliens. Reese is wearing a very fun, fashion forward Rodarte mini dress with some Balenciaga heels. I think this look is HOT! I love the mini, so unique and appropriate for the event. The shoes are killer too, they added a nice pop of color and made the look even more fun! I also am looking forward to seeing the movie!!

Ginnefer Goodwin in front of NYC's Ed Sulliven Theatre. She is wearing a Yves St. Laurent little black dress along with YSL dove grey sling backs. NOT HOT! I really do not like this look all that much. I love the peices as seperates, but together...not so much. I like how she was attempting to add contrast with the heels, but I think she should have opted for a BRIGHT color heel. She looks dreary, it's Spring!!

Eva Longoria Parker at the Guadalajara International Film Festival in a white Badgley Mischka '09 dress. This look is HOT! I love the glitz on the bodice, it's so delicate but makes a bold statement. The shreaded skirt makes the dress more youthful, and fun. I also think the color of the dress compliments her skin color beuatifully.

Lady GaGa just kicked off her tour at The House of Blues in San Diego! I love Lady GaGa, and I wish she was coming to the Carolinas. I guess I will just watch her on YouTube. I also love her sense of style, it's so unique and exuberant. One of the outfits she sported at her kickoff concert was a nude colored body suit with plastic bubbles all over and fishnet tights....nice. I am always looking forward to what she is wearing. Lady GaGa said she wanted her tour to reflect an Andy Warhol concept. Here are a few of my fav. outfits.

Nominated for Womenswear Designer of the Year are Marc Jacobs, Rodarte's Kate and Laura Mulleavy, and Narciso Rodriguez. Marc Jacobs will also recieve the International Designer award, despite the fact he is from Teaneck, New Jersey. First Lady, Michelle Obama, will also be honored by the CFDA. The First Lady will recieve the Board of Director's Special Tribute Reward. Nominated for the Swarovski Award for Womenswear is Jason Wu, Thakoon Panichgul, and Alexander Wang. The event will be held June 15, with the ceremony at Lincoln Center's newly renovated Alice Tully Hall.

I have seen so much coverage on this collection. Alexander McQueen's Fall'09 was featured on the "Today Show" and "Regis and Kelly." There has been a lot of controversy over it, many claim it is out right ridiculous while others state that it's very artistic and individual. Personally I thought some of the looks were out there, but it's Fashion week. If a designer cannot express his or her true feelings and artistic non-commercial ideas during fashion week, when can they? If you even look at pieces individualy as oposed to a whole look, many are very wearable. One thing I hated was how the models wore lipstick way over their lip line, it looked frightening. What do you think...creative or creepy?

Real-Life Barbie Dream House

In Malibu, California somone decided to build a REAL Barbie Dream House!!! 3,500 sq. ft. pad overlooks the Pacific Ocean! Mattel, makers of Barbie, atually decided to build the magnificent home. For the 50th anniversary of Barbie, Mattel commisoned interior decorator Johnathon Adler to deck out the dream house.

"Barbie was a dream client because she doesn't exist as a person," Adler said. "She exists as fantasy and is the perfect client because she's always happy and fun and loves everything. I thought to myself, 'How would Barbie live?' What I thought was Barbie would have a house that is glamorous, kittenish, chic, colorful and happy — as well as functional."

Barbie's closet is fully equipped with 50 pairs of shoes, all pink! Her bedroom is pink carpeted wall to wall, printed with her initials. In Barbie's garage is a pink bug with a pop up vanity set in the trunk!!!

You may ask yourself why would Mattel build this Dream House? It's going to be the site of their Posh Party on Monday night. This soiree is in celebration of Barbie's birthday. After the party, almost all the furniture is going to be shipped to the Palms in Las Vegas. There the furniture will furnish a special pink Barbie suite, ideal for bachelorette parties.

Worst Dressed of the Week?? I don't Think so.

OMG! on Yahoo.com did their weekly round up of "Worst Dressed." I disagreed with some of their choices!

Yahoo's fashion guru's hated this look. Saying head bands are so 2008??? I disagree!!! I love this look, it is so adorable. I love how Paris opted out of wearing something skanky, and instead chose a sweet ensemble. The headband adds some glamour!!!

"Watchmen" star, Malin Akerman, wore this Rami Kashou gown to the movie's permiere. I loved it! The creme color was very complimentary to her complexion. The ruffles were so delicate, but made a big statement. She looked elegant, but also very stylish! Yahoo's fashion police disagreed, saying the outfit was "anything, BUT fab"

Yahoo dissed this new 90210 star's look. I thought AnnaLynne McCord looked great! I loved how she wore a red belt, it gave the dress a nice pop of color. I also loved the snakeskin print scarf, very current!! The only thing I can see wrong with her is her sunglass tan lines around her eyes.

How to Fake Looking Skinny

Ok, so no one has the perfect body. But, i'm going to tell you how to fake it.

1. Wear One Color
If you wear similar color tops and bottoms you will instantly loose 5 pounds!! Or wear a solid color dress that hits right below the knee. If you decide to go with black you will look even slimmer. Why not add some funky, fun shoes to spice the outfit up?

2. Proportions
Make sure you blanace yourself out. DO NOT wear a billowy top with baggy jeans. Instead, wear a billowy top with some skinny jeans. Or wear a big full skirt with a fitted top.

3. Think Long
Cardigans that end directly at the waist tend to shorten the body. Opt out for a longer cardigan, this will ultimately create the illusion of a longer torso.

4. Add a Belt
Not only is wearing belts at a hot trend, it also helps your figure out. Wearing a belt accentuates your waist, which is most likely the smallest part on your torso. Choose a wider belt over a thinner one, this will make you look smaller.

Personally, I thought Kate Winslet's gown was gorgeous. She wore a grey ensamble made exclusively for her by Yves St. Laurent. However, one of her toughest critics did not like her gown one bit. Winslet's 8 year old daughter, Mia, didn't like the color, she thought the gray was too dreary. I have to disagree with Mia, I thought the dress had a smooth safistication and the grey color complimented that. The lace with rose detailing made the gown elegant, and the A-symetrical strap made it current. I also loved her hair, it loked very futuristic, yet had a 50's vibe to it. Her jewlery, all by Chopard, added some glitz and glam. What do you think about Kate's look??

Halle Berry looked stunning in a very flattering gown as she arrived at the Black Women in Hollywood luncheon. The gown hugged her in all the right places, and the color complimented her complexion perfectly.

I LOVE Paula Abdul, but not her outfit. The tapestry look is just too much, even for Paula. The white shoes really aren't doing it for me either. Viva Las Vegas and Ralph Lauren Fall 2009 RTW

I just got back from a study tour in Vegas with school. It was very fun, and I learned A LOT! We went to an off-price trade show, sourcing at MAGIC, and we got a tour of Fashion Show Mall. Going on this trip just further confirmed my need to be a professional in the Fashion World. At the mall we also saw a fashion show from a new store called Metro Park, which has very hip urban clothing. Below are a few pictures I snapped from the fashion show.

I was wondering if anyone else has been checking out the pre-Fall 2009 collections. I know it's not even Spring yet, but I am already super excited for next Fall!! It seemed as though glitz is going to be a big trend for next fall!!!

Lanvin Pre-Fall 2009! I LOVEEEE this Jersey Dress encrested with crystals! So Glamorous! It's kind of like the modern age jazz era!

Proenza Schouler's pre-Fall collection also had some hints of glitz, but a bit more sudtle then Lanvin. Check out this sparkly short full skirt. Very wearable!! I love how they incorporated a little sparkle through out the whole collection in different pieces!

I am also going to have to blab about my two favorite designers' pre-Fall collections. Michael Kors seemed to channel the 40's in his collection. His collection was treny yet effortlessly timeless, llike always.

This artistic sheath dress was my favorite piece from Michael Kors.

My other favorite designer, Zac Posen, also seemed to be inspired by the 40's. His collection was filled with flirty cocktail dresses!!

This was my favorite dress from Zac Posen pre-Fall 2009. I think it would be very flattering on many figure types. I also love the red color, it really pops!!

So, if you look at the previous blogs you may notice that I was actually blogging for a course I was taking at school. I enjoyed it so much I decided to start blogging on a less scholastic level. So from now on my blog will be all about my ranting and ravings on fashion, and my boring/sometimes eventful life. I also will be adding occasional personal outfit posts.

But for just some tid bits of info about me. My name is Megan Cassidy, I live in Greensboro North Carolina. I attend UNCG where I am majoring in Consumer Apparel and Retail Studies. I live with my boyfriend Josh, who I have been dating almost 3 years! I have a Chihuahua named Chica, whom I adore! I love to dress her up!! I aspire to be a Fashion Buyer one day for a high end department store. My favorite places to shop at are Nordstroms, American Apparel, and in my Mother's closet.

SO i have to rant about my obsessions at the moment!!! I am so excited, I ordered this great turtleneck dress from American Apparel today!! All these people left reviews saying how amazing the dress was and how it fit them so well, so I have high expectations! I got it in this great eggplant color. I was going to get black, but I decided I already have too much black!

Isn't it cuteeee?!!? I have been on the look out for some rocker kind of looking heels preferably with studs to be paired with leather leggings. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where i could find some?? Pictured below is some Gucci booties (which are on sale right now!) that have the vibe i'm going for. However, I would prefer a pump instead of a bootie, that way I could also wear them in the summer!

The Housing Crisis

I can definitely see the effects of the housing crisis every day. The decline of home sales has financially affected many families. Because of this financial crisis many people haven’t been spending much money on non essential items such as accessories and home fashions.

It’s very obvious to see that accessory specialty stores and department stores are struggling. It seems as though many of these stores are having many sales to encourage people to shop more. It seems as though Macy’s is advertising a “special” sale every week.

Although the accessory industry has been struggling, I think the home fashion industry has suffered the most. Because of the housing crisis, many people haven’t been purchasing homes. When one purchases a home they usually decorate it. The lack of buying homes has caused people to decline on spending on home fashions.

People are just not spending as much money on things as they have in the past. The housing crisis is very financially draining, and is damaging our economy.

The Greatest Guest Speaker

I thoroughly enjoyed our guest speaker today! I learned a lot of things about the industry that I was unaware of. I also got a bunch of tips on how to transfer from college life into the “real world.”

I was completely unaware of the magnitude of the quilt industry. When I say quilt industry, I don’t mean just quilts, like blankets, I mean quilt patterns. I loved how our speaker took the quilt patterns and made so many different things with it. I loved that cute tote she made, and the apron. I would have never thought that you could make so many things from something that is used to make blankets. I also was surprised that so many famous designers designed for the company she works with, I was very impressed.

I really appreciated how our guest speaker talked about the transition from college into the real world. I liked how she explained that things we learn while in college do actually help in the real world. I also learned that getting an internship in the field that you want to work in is a very crucial thing. Having an internship allows one to gain work experience, but also se how we like that field of work.

Overall, today’s guest speaker was by far my favorite. I love how she related to the class, and how she acted so real. I learned some very important things from her, that I will take into consideration as I transition into the working fashion industry.

Sweatshop Prevention and Abolishment

When one thinks of sweatshops they normally think of places such as China, India, and Hati. While there are many sweatshops in those countries, people are unaware that there are some here in America. In New York the Department of Labor has found 80 sweatshops, and in California 90. I don’t know about you, but I was completely shocked when I heard this. America is suppose to be free, yet regulated by laws. Most Americans couldn’t imagine a thing like this going on in their own country.

Well known companies such as K-Mart, Walt Disney, and Levi’s have all purchased items that have been produced in sweatshops. The Department of Labor estimates that over half of the sewing factories in the United States are paying below the minimum wage. It is also estimated that in the United States the average wage in a sweat shop is $0.60 per hour. This is compared to Hati who’s average wage in a sweatshop is $0.30 per hour, we are not that far behind. We as American citizens need to take a stance against sweatshops here in the United States. We also need to take a stance against purchasing items that have been produced in sweatshops in other countries.

Some U.S. companies have decided to join this stance in order to help stop sweatshop production in other countries. Levi’s will not do business with factories that violate employees’ human rights. The Gap has signed an agreement to monitor factory conditions in El Salvador. One may ask why people from other countries would work under these horrible conditions. Well first off, these individuals need to support their families, but also some sweatshops offer workers some advantages. For example, In Malaysia women can work in the Motorola factory for $300.00 a month verses the rice field which is $100.00 a month. While that is still very low, it’s triple what these women would be making in the rice field.

In conclusion, I think we should take more precautions in closing sweat shops here in the United States, but also stop buying products from sweatshops in other countries.

Milan Fashion Week, Art or Usiability?

Milan fashion week is known for its artistic views and lack of actual usability. However, in the spring 2009 collection many designers took an alternate route, and made their clothes more wearable than usual. Although, these collections were more wearable than usual, they still had a very artistic element to them.

I loved the Versace collection, Donatella decided to go toward a young and sweet direction. She played with heart shapes, and structure. The collection was much more wearable then her fall 2008. Although it was more wearable, she did not lack craftsmanship. People go to Milan to see high fashion, to see pieces of art and the Versace collection did not disappoint them. Donatella obviously put a lot of thought into her collection. Her clothes illuminated expertise and were filled with soul.

Some popular trends at the Milan shows were transparency and pale color schemes. Although a transparent dress may seem very un wearable on the runway, if paired with some practical pieces it too can become practical. Karl Lagerfeld seemed to understand this balance between art and usability with the Fendi Spring 2009 collection. Lagerfeld displayed his artistic ability by creating a very modern collection. Sarah Mower from style.com praised Lagerfeld “he cleverly dispensed broderie anglaise, tablecloth lace, and laser cutouts as he went along.” I thought that many of the pieces from Fendi seemed very imaginative but paired with the right pieces could become extremely wearable.

I think that fashion should be a perfect balance between art and usability. I thought that the Milan spring 2009 collection displayed a great balance between the two. Designers such as Donatella Versace, Karl Lagerfeld, Alessandro Dell'Aqua, and Giorgio Armani all understood and displayed this balance. I thought that Milan had just as much usability as Paris. Milan should now be known for what fashion should really be.

Ethnic Influences on Apparel Designs

Designers are inspired by almost anything. They are inspired by an old movie, a period in time, or an architectural building. Many designers get their inspiration from other cultures. One may not notice, but most of the clothes we wear today are a mixture of inspirations and interpretations from cultures all over the world.

Nicole Miller’s spring 2009 collection was inspired by her trip to Haiti. While in Haiti she became enchanted with voo-doo. She used Haitian inspired prints and patterns on billowing blouses and body hugging gowns. She even used a pattern featuring tiny voo-doo dolls! She also took her inspiration a step further by accessorizing with Haitian style panama hats. Nicole Miller’s spring 2009 collection was clearly a reflection of Haitian culture.

Missoni’s spring 2009 collection also displayed pieces that were ethnically influenced. Missoni’s collection was a mixture of Japanese and Italian inspired pieces. Some pieces had kimono style sleeves and obi belts. However, most of the surface patterns were derived from Italian art. Most of her collection was in neutral shades of beige, bronze, and muted brown. This is also a clear example that clothing we wear today is inspired from many diverse cultures.

When someone says “ethnic influences” one may automatically think of a foreign place. However, there are many different ethnic influences here in the United States. An ethnic influence can just be the influence from someone with a different lifestyle. For example in Alexander Wang’s spring 2009 collection his inspiration was clearly a rocker lifestyle. In his collection he showcased leather jackets, textured tights, and studded booties.

Culture is a very important aspect in our lives. It allows us to learn about different people, their beliefs, and their traditions. Culture is especially important in the fashion world. It clearly is inspiration to many designers.

Main Trends of New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week was glamorous and trendsetting, as always. One of the main trends this year was celebrating anniversaries! Calvin Klein has been in business 40 years, Betsey Johnson for 30, DKNY 20, and Tuleh 10!

Beside anniversaries one of the trends at New York fashion week was jersey dresses. Donna Karen and BCBG Max Azria both featured dresses made of jersey that freely draped around the body. Donna Karen’s version was a bit more sexy and appropriate for night, while BCBG Max Azria’s was a more delicate. Slouchy pants were also a trend at fashion week. Ralph Lauren, Donna Karen, and Nichole Miller all showcased loose fitting, relaxed pants. So this spring you can kiss your skinny jeans goodbye because a 90’s trend has finally arrived, scary.

Moving on to a more pleasing subject, magenta will be the new “it” color for spring 2009! This is a relief because it compliments various skin tones beautifully. Matthew Williamson and Adam Lippes collections featured magenta. I loved Matthew Williamson’s magenta patent leather jacket and matching mini skirt! Earth tones were also a very popular color theme. Although they are a lot more subtle then magenta, they are also very wearable. Designers such as Ralph Lauren, Vera Wang, Donna Karen, and Zac Posen featured gold, khaki, and bronze in their collections.

Rocker chic was all over the runways at New York Fashion Week. Alexander Wang showcased leather jackets, textured tights, and studded booties. Diesel Black Gold also followed the rocker theme by featuring leather biker vests. My favorite piece from Diesel Black Gold was a plaid trench coat, which they paired with grey ankle boots and a black top hat! To the other end of the spectrum, embellished bohemian was also a very popular trend. Diane Von Furstenberg was very hippy-esque by having her models wear silk flowers and braided leather in their hair. Milly was also very bohemian with frocks that had a “hippy” theme to them. Miss Sixty displayed the trend by accessorizing with crochet hats.

Luckily, most of these trends are actually very wearable. Of course there were many others out there, I just chose a few.

Organic Clothing

It seems as though environmentally friendly clothing is becoming more popular every day. Many companies, including textile producers, are now making their products with the environment in mind. Some companies are making these changes in producing products by using organic material, decreasing the use of water in production, and using low-impact dyes. The demand for environmentally responsible textiles is also increasing; this has caused textile manufacturers to also make changes in their production process.
After reading the third chapter in our text book I learned a great deal about organic clothes and the production of them. I learned that there are many councils, associations, and organizations that have played a vital role in the research and development of clothes that are non-harmful to the environment. There are organizations that list companies that manufacture organic and environmentally friendly yarns. The National Council of Textile Organizations and The Sustainable Style Foundation are a few of these accommodating and informative groups.
I think that organic clothing is a great idea! The environment is being contaminated every day; I think that any way to prevent this is helpful. I am also very impressed with the way textile producers and apparel manufacturers have found alternate ways to produce their products while keeping the environment in mind.
Many people have the misconception that organic clothing is ugly, but actually a lot of stylish clothing lines are deciding to go green. Halogen, one of my favorite brands has started to make organic tee-shirts, I actually own a few. Nike, American Apparel, JC Penny, H&M, and Timberland have also incorporated environmentally conscious clothing into their products. All companies should consider becoming environmentally friendly; I would pay more money for a piece of clothing if I knew the production of it wasn’t harmful to the environment. Overall, organic clothing is a great idea! Saving the environment and looking chic doing it sounds good to me.

My Favorite Designer

In fashion there are many different styles, and a persistent variance between each one. There are designers who focus more on architectural design, while others focus on a stronger narrative element. This is the difference between clothes that just are things you wear and clothes that remind one of life.
Roberto Cavalli’s clothing reminds me of life, of the world. He is a very imaginative designer, and each piece of his clothing tells its own story. His fall 2008 ready to wear collection was beautiful, flowing gowns with details of flowers give fall a new light. His collection had a bohemian, gypsy esque theme with lots of flowing wrap dresses. Cavalli paired florals with furs, which may seem like an unlikely pair, but complimented each other well. “I love to show details of flowers, of the natural world, to reveal God as a creative designer.” Says Cavalli. I think that is what distinguishes Roberto from other designers; he seems to be inspired by almost anything.
Cavalli’s fall 2008 collection was not only imaginative, but also ingenious. I actually admire him greatly because he pushes techniques to the limit, and isn’t afraid to experiment with strange colors and textures. Cavalli is also very inventive; he patented a revolutionary printing procedure on leather, and started creating his now-famous patchworks of different materials. His clothes also appear to compliment many body types, which is a very important quality in a designer and their apparel line.
Roberto Cavalli seems to combine beauty and practicality to make his wonderful designs. He thinks about all aspects of clothing, from versatility to the cut of each piece. Cavalli understands that clothes are very important to people, how they feel, look, and most importantly how they fit. He understands that clothes are just not things you throw on your back, that they are things you live and express your life in. Roberto Cavalli’s clothing is artistic, inspiring, practical, original, and architectural that is why he’s my favorite designer.
